about

See is a song inspired by my experiences with sleep paralysis and hallucination, caused by my sensitivity to information overloads from social media and screen-based life. I wrote it with my cello in an alternative tuning which was used by Zoltán Kodály in his Sonata for Solo Cello in B Minor (1915). I think this song expresses my journey from western classical training to what you hear now; an expression of my perspective through original songs made on my cello. Recorded entirely during lockdown, I'm grateful to the people who made this track with me from afar. Hope you like it xxx

lyrics

Where is your wedding dress?
Can I wear it today like a uniform
They say it's for the best
We'll pretend like we've manufactured feeling.

Feels like we're distracted

If you hold my neck
Maybe you'll stop the rain from falling now
Look at this jumbled wreck
You know it makes us not see anything

Feels like we're distracted
Ah just one minute more.

I heard it in my sleep
Bright screen is calling me
I'm paralysed but I hear it all
My eyes are open; I see these walls.
I saw it in my sleep
Your camera's facing me
I hear the music, hear every voice
My eyes are open, I have no choice.

Well in the evening
Fight the darkness and we forget to rest now.
And in the daytime
Busy hating my weakness, watched the hours pass.

Oh, feels like we're distracted
Ah just one minute more.

I had a dream last night
Bright screen that I can't fight
I'm paralysed but I hear it all
My eyes are open, I see these walls.
I saw it in my sleep
Your camera's facing me
I hear the music, hear every voice
You won't give me a choice.

This wedding dress, it's charred
Maybe it's gone too far.
Start turning from side to side
The street lights like a pair of eyes
Haunting me.

about

midori jaeger London, UK

Cellist, singer and songwriter Midori Jaeger is a London-based artist who makes emotive songs that refuse to fit into a box. Performing with just a cello and her voice, she confronts difference, belonging, gender and mixed heritage through a distinct and cello-fuelled sonority that aches with meaning and pulses with groove.

Midori gratefully acknowledges support from the PRS Foundation.
